Mitigating Employee Theft & Fraud

To mitigate employee theft-related losses and reduce exposures, it’s critical to implement strong internal controls. This includes not allowing the same employee to keep books, collect funds, write checks and reconcile bank accounts; arranging for monthly bank statements to be delivered unopened to the company owner for review; conducting background checks on new employees; arranging for fraud audits by outside accountants or an internal audit department; providing ethics training for employees; instituting anonymous fraud reporting mechanisms, such as hotlines; installing workplace surveillance devices; and looking for behavioral red flags including those living beyond his or her means and having financial difficulties, or having unusually close association with vendors or customers.
